Before You Move

Get organized

Before you start packing, it's a good idea to declutter and get rid of anything you won't need in your new home. Work room by room and put your belongings into "pack," "donate," and "throw away" piles. It may also be beneficial to host a garage sale to make some extra cash.

Once you've pared everything down, you can really begin the packing process.

Pack up

It's best to pack your home room by room, saving your essential spaces (like kitchens and bathrooms) for last. Consider investing in reinforced boxes and heavy duty packing supplies to protect your belongings. It's also a good idea to label or color-code your boxes, so you'll know exactly what's inside when you go to unpack.

Change your address

It can sometimes take the post office a few weeks to process a change of address and mail forwarding. You can even complete the process online!

You'll also want to provide your bank, employer, doctor, and any other important services with your new address. Don't forget to tell your friends and family, too!

Set up the utilities

Take some time to get acquainted with your new utility providers and let them know when you want to start service. Essentials, such as water, electric, and gas, should all be turned on before move-in day. You may need to schedule appointments ahead of time for wifi, cable, or phone line installation.

On Moving Day

Protect your information

Certain things just don't belong on the moving truck. Be sure to keep any important documents (like passports and social security cards), medications, or valuables with you throughout the move. You should also have all important phone numbers written down or stored in your contacts.

Take a bag

Just in case you make it to your new home before the moving truck or have to stay in a hotel for a few nights, you should always pack an overnight back with essentials for moving day. Don't forget to bring your toiletries, a change of clothes, your phone charger, and anything else you might need.

Do one last walkthrough

Before you say goodbye to your old home, it's best to do one last walkthrough to ensure that you haven't left anything behind. Don't forget to turn off the lights and lock the doors on the way out!

After You Move

Change the locks

You never know who may have keys to your new home. That's why it's best to hire a locksmith right after you move—don't forget to have a few extra keys made, too.

Clean First

Before you even think about unpacking, take some time to thoroughly clean your home. Without furniture in the way, you can get into hard to reach spots and ensure that your space looks spotless. If you're feeling exhausted, it may be worth splurging on a professional cleaning service.

Inspect boxes

As your movers unload boxes into your home, inspect each one for any damage and make note of any missing items. If you encounter any problems, contact your moving company directly.

Unpack by room

Unpacking may seem like a never-ending process, but breaking it down room by room can make things much more manageable. Sort each box into the proper space, starting with your kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. From there, you can begin unpacking at your own pace—don't rush yourself!

Enjoy home!

Don't forget to kick back, relax, and take some time to enjoy your new home. Your Palm Coast adventure is just getting started!
